Longtails! PURE AND MIXED!!!

OMG! He's gorgeous Silly! are you going to have eggs, or are you going to keep the tail going? You won't believe what happened to Gainsborough...

DOH! Just saw your answer on the egg thing...

I lost my Gainsborough to a possum. Big fat sucker of a possum. Thing had to weigh about 20 pounds. He went into to the coop during the day while the birds were all out, and I never saw him. He was in the coop itself, and even in the winter, my birds are still roosting in the run except 2 faverolle hens. Well the possum went after the fav hens, and ripped out tails. I think Gains went into rescue, cuz he was just AWESOME in the hen protection dept, and he was no match for this monster... Monster took several bullets to kill... yeah... I was pretty mad, and devestated. Gainsboroughs tail was nearly 3 feet long at the time of his murder by possum.... THREE FEET! I still have honey, and think she'll be thrown in with Snow and Red Devil...
Well that stinks you lost your boy...
(I lost my fave roo last week to something, fox maybe) I've had to lock my yard and leave the dogs loose. It seems to be deterring what ever it is.

well, things change... lol, I ended up having to put him in a coop/run with his hen due to space issues. And DH was tired of getting his ears blown out every morning by his crowing.... So, yes if he has figured out how to do his job, we will have eggs. She lays one every couple days.

Will you be coming to Chickenstock?

Ok so when you cross them with another breed, are you crossing the rooster long tails with a regular hen? Or a long tail hen with a regular rooster? Or does that work when you cross a long tail hen with a regular rooster? I know I have been told that rooster combs are passed onto baby chicks more so then the hens combs to the chicks. But I never thought about the tails.

The genetic hackle birds seemed to produce a lot of males (selective breeding, i guess, since
males are wanted for feathers).- so most of mine roos were crossed with phoenix, & i had a blue
Andalusian hens, in the mix.
Now I have some nice mixed hens & want to get some new colors in phoenix & sumatra group.

We found out the game bird we took in has long tail in it what it is we don't know. However his leg wont ever be normal after all that we went through we found out he later on broke it, and it hasn't healed right so now he walks with a limp or hops with his leg up. Not sure if he could breed or not like that. It doesn't hurt him any more he just can't walk right. Someone told me it could be Sumatra in him.

I asked on one of the threads if the female line was of more importance because I had read in Japan for long-tails this is what they think & is what my Great Grand Dad had said concerning breeding too (horses), others told me I was wrong. But I found this, and it is an experiment they did in Hawaii, read the whole short thread it explains traditional BC very well and how to use it to breed for traits and find negative traits in your lines. I think it may be of some help.

I have always been told to breed the best roosters to the hens with the longest tails. But when I have more time I'll come back and read your link.
