Look how nice my turkeys are coming along :)

I got two BBW turkeys on a whime. Love them. They are very funny. Follow what ever human is in front of them all over the yard. I thought they would stay in our wooded lot but no they found me in the front yard. Mine are only 3 weeks old and cute as can be. We named them Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Can anybody tell how long they take to reach a good processing age? I know there are some that grow like CRX and others that take longer. Just wondering when to order some for next year.

Katy those look great, and Steve those are SUPER COOL!!

When I raised turkeys and bought something other then the white large breasted breed I generally would process at about 6 months. The heritage breeds will never have the amount of meat as the commercial whites but when there was four of us in the house we have no problem making two meals out of the heritage birds. Heck after the second day you kind of get tired of it any way.

I liked the commercial whites for frying. I would raise them to about 12 weeks process and then cut the meat into strips and fry like a chicken. It was very good and something different.

As far as raising chickens and turkeys together. Always did and never seemed to have a problem. Others have had issues I believe the biggest threat of cross contamination is blackhead. I had a seperate brooder house and it was disinfected in the fall and sat idol through the cold winters. I think that helped in my lack of issues plus I always (at that time) bought by chickens and turkeys through a hatchery.
