Look out he bites

Wow. *-* Not a lot of people can do this nowadays, more worried about preventing lawsuits than protecting self and close ones!

How are the kids?
I'm sure the older one knows about life where you live, but how is the little one? I hope this doesn't scare them of all dogs.
I'm so happy you had a forearm ready and within reach.
We always have a loaded gun right by the door, but not usually on us when we are outside.

The 9 year old is learning to shoot and she has seen me dispatch other predators as well as deer and farm animals. The little one doesn't have a clue as to what happened. As U mentioned, I had my dogs locked up. Not because they would do much more than lick the kids to death. Well that is not true, they go in the 100 pound range, so I kept them away from the little one. But the older one plays with the dogs all the time. She won't let them jump up on her.
What I laugh at is a lot of people have no idea what it is like to live any other place than close to a city. One of my wife's school years friends came to visit at Christmas, he and his family only live 30 miles from us. Yet they were amazed at the area. They never go to the foothills, it is to San Francisco or Sacramento.
In just those few miles it is like traveling back in time. The reason I live here. I never know what I might see when I go out the door. Or might try to come in the door.

I'm glad the little one didn't know what was going on. I like to hear when people are teaching kids about guns. Too many kids don't understand the responsibilty of them.
We have to be very careful here when we have to shoot something, town has grown out to us! DH said he used to be able to recognize every car that went down the road in front of the house, and if they didn't know who it was, it wasn't long before someone would call or come by and say " So & so had a visitor today from such & such place"!
Things have changed so much here, I wish we were still way out in the country. No chance of moving, this place has been in DH's family since 1911.
Even with the traffic, when people visit, they say it is like going back in time coming over here. (I take that as a compliment, even if they don't mean it that way)

DH says they might mean that we are really backwoods!!!!

I'm glad that your neighbor was glad for your course of action, but the coward should have done it himself once he knew the dog was vicious.

I'm glad everyone is ok (except the dog) and not traumatized.

D'Angelo, sorry but the wrong gender. Once the (any) predator comes over, under or though my fence, it doesn't always leave. And as some of those that know me will tell you, had the owner acted goofy, he would have had a problem also. I still feel that anyone or thing that endangers my family, critters or myself, should be dealt with accordingly. That is what holes and rock salt is for. Have to keep the doctors busy, until this new health care bill passes. Then they will be hard to find.
