First I am very sorry for your loss.

No the dog doesn't know better ~ he is a dog and is doing what is natural for dogs. Dogs do not have the same reasoning ability as humans.

I also have 2 german shepherds and 1 beagle. I do not trust my male german shepherd around the chickens and therefore he will never be left alone where he can get to the chickens. He has never harmed one, but I will not place him in the situation where he can. It is my responsibility to make sure that my chickens are safe from predators including my own dogs. Please do not consider harming your dog for this ~ if you no longer want him please consider rehoming him, preferably through a GSD rescue.

my neighbors dog did this to me last year I lost more than half of my flock.

I am so sorry for your loss I know how hard it is.

Here is some suggestions that you could try, i've heard of tying one of there foots (chickens) to his neck and let it rot. You can also put logs all around the bottom of the fence on both sides so he can't dig his way in or even putting an electric fence around it so he gets shocked everytime he goes near it good luck and sadly the easiest thing might be getting rid of him. How is the dog getting in? That is the biggest question to figure out. Hes back again this year so we invested in a bebe gun hopefully that i don't have to use it good luck.and let us know what happens.

It's up to the owner to make sure the dog can't get to the birds.

Honestly, it made me a bit sick this morning after clicking on the thread, not knowing what the subject was. Next time, if there is a next time, please put a HUGE warning in the title.

I, too, was sickened by the unexpected pics. So many and so large was unecessary. I know you are upset and I am very sorry for you.

I have 2 large dogs. One got a hen, ONCE. There are now two fences between the dog yard and the chicken yard. Just as I protect my dogs from disease and danger, I protect my chickens from disease and danger.

Rebuild your coop and run so the dog cannot get in anymore. He's doing what's natural to dogs. Keep the dog fenced in as well as the chickens.

So sorry, I have had the same experience but with someone else's dog. It's a horrible thing and I wish I could undo it for you.

and we are getting rid of him. i want to put a bullet in his head tho.
and the dogs werent even suppost to be out. everytime i put the dogs outside when the chickens are out in the run, i go out with them because i cant trust them as far as i can throw them. but someone didnt listen to my advise. someone put them out there, alone...and now 15 chickens are dead...

Hon, I'm sorry for your loss...but, I highly recommend you speak with someone regarding your hatred. It will continue to eat you up if you don't, because so long as there are dogs & chickens, it'll likely happen again at some point.

I totally agree! The dog is being a dog, and putting a bullet in a dogs head isn't going to fix YOUR problem. Dogs will be dogs, and no they don't know better. If they did, they wouldn't do it!

I know you are very upset and angry right now ~ however it seems that you are blaming the dog for something that he did because he was put outside unattended by someone else. Please try to take a breath, calm down and reassess your security for both your chickens and dogs and make sure the others in your household obey the rules.

I would like to see this thread deleted, so no one else has to see this. These are nasty, poor taste pictures. I am so sorry for your loss though.

well there is awarning now and in pedator pest section. plenty have posted pics of dead birds. Truth is if you don't want to see pics like this and it bothers you, it does to me, then don't click on the post that says WARNING VERY GRAPHIC in a predator and pest section, because there are probably dead birds, or something dead. IMO
