Yep - I have a drill and I was going to buy the smaller lengths. Just don't have a saw to cut the notch. Perhaps I can just mount the 5" cap 1/2-3/4 of an inch below the pipe creating a gap all around for the feed to fall through - or drill holes close together in the shape of an arch and then take pliers and kind of snip the PVC off. It will be jagged but still functional.
 
You do not have to cut the notch. I didn't since even the person who originally made them said that in later "models" he didn't do the notch either. Just screw the pipe about an inch up from the bottom of the larger cap. I would suggest going two inches bigger on the bottom caps. With only one inch on the ones that I made it looks a little tight to be getting their heads in to get the food.
