Look what I found at our lake. Should I do anything?

Contact officials first and make sure you know your information because some people can be rude and testy when they themselves are ignorant about wild and domestic fowl.

At our lake, the wild mallard DO come up to you and will eat out of your hands. But, all of those that are the most tame are ones that have lived at that one lake their entire lives, so the see people as a source of food and not a threat. Not too many migrate from this area.

Do you go to this lake often? Where they there the last time you went?

I would talk to whomever is in charge of the lake about them before taking them, just to make sure. Where I live, there are several dumpees and a lot of people would be extremely upset if one was taken. If someone wants to rescue one of them, I usually advise people to take them right after they are first seen at the lake.

For now, I would get some food and go there to feed them as often as you can until you can find out more information.

i would leave the male and female malards and take the pekin as the mallards could be wild but there is a high chance that the pekin has been dumped

I was there all last summer and into the fall fishing in the same area, and didn't see these guys around. I don't know if they were there this winter. Do you think that the Pekin just hooked up with wild Mallards?

Would he be too attached to the Mallards?

I see you already have ducks so I am sure the Pekin would be happy with them.

I'm sure he would. He would just hate being quarantined

but I think you and ducker123 are right. I do need to get him out of there.

I second this, you HAVE to tell them before you take them. That way they cannot come back and get you in trouble. Who knows, with the economy, they want money any way they can get it! Better safe than sorry...and they are beautiful!

In SF, where I grew up, there were white ducks but they were so friendly that many that would catch them for dinner! Now, there are none. (Asian people sell ducks in the windows of their stores, hanging upside down...and I had many Asian friends who told me about the taking and eating...I am NOT picking on Asians so no bashing.)

Don't worry I didn't see it as offensive.

I live in a town of old time ways...meaning that there are a lot of people here who get animals and throw them out to pasture. If they survive, great. If not, oh well. I will talk with game and fish on Monday and see what they say about rescuing the duck or ducks.
