Look what I found at our lake. Should I do anything?

I would take them while I had the chance. I have done a lot of dog and cat rescue. Sometimes you only get one chance. You leave them and go back and find them dead. I say take them all and run!

I second this, you HAVE to tell them before you take them. That way they cannot come back and get you in trouble. Who knows, with the economy, they want money any way they can get it! Better safe than sorry...and they are beautiful!

In SF, where I grew up, there were white ducks but they were so friendly that many that would catch them for dinner! Now, there are none. (Asian people sell ducks in the windows of their stores, hanging upside down...and I had many Asian friends who told me about the taking and eating...I am NOT picking on Asians so no bashing.)

When my dad was young he had a lone female mallard as a pet and they just gave them their table scarps and she loved it, she was the best duck and it would nip at people as they walked by if my dad was around to "protect" him, one day some korean people moved down the street from him and Dixie (his duck) went missing, he went to everyones house and they said "oh thats was yours...sorry we ate it" I felt so bad when he told me that!! But its still kinda funny!!

what happens is people who know nothing about ducks and don't do there research buy ducklings for thier kids out of the blue on easter because they are so cute. when they grow up.... adorable fuzzy baby turns into a big animal thats eats a hole in there wallet. so what do they do? they release them into what they think is
there " natural " habitat wich is in the wild. But domestics cant survive in the wild. Or yes they could be escapies but its most likely choice A. Not sure though. So if i were you id take em. But let some one know like park officials so you dont get into trouble. there so pretty!

I was thinking that if you take them, perhaps you can leave a little flyer or note up around the area where they hang out to tell people what happened to them. When I go to the lake, I check on all the domestic ducks and if there's one missing for long, I get real upset and think that it died.

Just a suggestion. I know I would appreciate it if someone did that.

that "pekin" looks like the ducklings I just got from a lady, mostly white with few scattered spots she told me they were pekin mallard crosses maybe they were all dumped.... i would take em' all.

Well, I posted an update at the beginning of this thread, and realized that it doesn't get bumped up unless you post a reply. I am bumping up so that all those that replied will know what I decided to do about the ducks.

I'm glad you went and asked an expert on this. This is what I do in regards to these issues, too. If it were me, I would go and bring yummy treats for them whenever you go.

Make sure you have the resources first. Leave the mallards alone. They can survive. I can't imagine the Pekin surviving winter if its cold.

Sigh, it sounds like (translation), we are on a low budget right now and we can't go around spread our already thin resources. If is not winter now, so we will deal with it later when things get better for us or worse for the duck. It is alright, that mixed Pekin is better off than if it was a full Pekin. It can probably swim better than the regular Pekins. This is a textbook example of releasing ducks. The mallards are fine. but the Pekin isn't.
