Ew! I don't like them either. One night my dog was barking out in the yard. I went to check it out and discovered he had cornered a young possum. Man, those things are even uglier when they're scared and mad! Mostly we see them squashed in the road though. I'm shivering too!
I always shine a light around my coop before locking everyone up. One night a friend with chickens locked a skunk in with hers.
LOL, Green. I was just gonna say the same thing to them! I am originally from Mt Pleasant, TX, just down the road a bit South from ya'll, and possum was not an unusual occurance on the dinner menu. My best friend growing up had one as a pet, and even though it was hard to keep it clean, it was a pretty good pet, and it was great for cleaning up scraps. That hissing sound freaks a lot of people out, but they aren't too bad, as far as critters go, my ex-husbands birddog is waaay more of a pain in the butt. We dont have any possum up here in the mountains, but we have to watch out for eagles and cranky elk that try to break in to steal feed and end up getting their antlers hung up in the wire and playing heck with the pen. I would prefer possums any ole day.

It was probably playing possum. Seriously, they act like they're dead so that predators won't eat them. If you had left him alone for a few minutes, he probably would have gotten up and left.

A little to late for that since they put him out of his misery. I dont like wild possums but i think I would have given the baby a chance at life. Thats just me.
