Unfortunately I have been through this VERY thing. The dogs got 65 RIR pullets in ONE night. I didn;t see who did it but I had my suspicions. At last I caught them in the act and on my side of the road, and now we have no dog problem.

For goodness sake, If you have birds, livestock etc.. get a GUN... .22 is perfect , USE that gun (practice practice practice) Life in the country means you have to prepare for strays, or vermin. I am so sorry for your loss. I cant count the number of strays or neighbor dogs that have been escorted home to their owners with a warning... next time bring your shovel!!!

I believe I would have shot the dog. Have a neighbor will several dogs that he doesnt keep up. They run the neighborhood. I have given him a nice friendly warning to keep his dogs at home.
I figure I will walk on water first.

For those that think a paintball gun, or b b gun or pellet gun is going to scare a dog away...... HAHAHAHAHAHA Get real, very few cheap pellet guns will do the job. some expensive ones might, Get a .22 rifle buy a scope and be handy with it. Dont mess with pissing off a dog with a paintball or bb. do the job!!!
Save your animals.. I have never seen a dog that has been shot with a .22 kill another chicken. NEVER NEVER in my life. Get the point?

We had coon problems. Brothers took care of that. Most left. The one that didnt, the dog got it.

I don't know about the majority, but I don't think I wanna shoot a dog or a coyote or a coon. Not passing judgement on those of you who can. And heaven forbid, but I haven't been in the same situation either - soooo. I would have to go with predator proofing by all means first. Who needs the drama of the other way? A dead or dying dog to be dealt with, ticked off neighbors, tramatized family (me, my kid) any legal issues. I certainly couldn't go out in my back yard firing a rifle, I'd hate to miss in my panic and shoot the neighbors pool. haha

use hardware cloth for the entire run and bury it at least a foot in the ground. then put rocks (at least a pound or two in weight) around the entire perimeter of the coop and run. it creates a nice "rock wall" and a lot of security.

I know what you mean about special, my dad is 86 and all my lil featherfoot bantams were born on his birthday. I think I would have to kill a dog. Thats something hard for me to say, I am a dog person. People say: "Its just a chicken!" Don't know the work involved in raising them. They do have personalities and feelings. I am so sorry!

Well I would have shot the dog with a gun instead of the camera. However the photo may get you compensation if you ever do find the owner. The dog will probably be back.

In the meantime...HOT WIRE around your pen, 2 strands. It works!! Chicken wire is useless as you found out, keeps chickens in but doesn't keep predators out.

So sorry for your losses. I had dogs wipe out almost all my chickens and guineas years ago, broke into my hen house. Didn't take but one time to fix that problem but it was so sad for my birds. I had another useless dog at the time that was staked out by the chicken house and all he did was watch the massacre...didn't even bark! Grrrrrrrrrr.
