Guess what? My chickens don't know how to act like chickens. We received the five pullets on Thursday and promptly put them in their large coop/run. Since they have been in the coop/run they have used approximately four square feet. It dawned on me that these chickens have never seen the outside much less lived outdoors. I am sure they were raised indoors with lots of other chickens.
I am going to take a chair to the run and sit with them and try to lure them around the entire run. I might even show them how to run around and catch a grasshopper,
Have any of you bought pullets from a large breeder? If so, how long did it take for your chickens to act like chickens?
Kudzu, I just discovered from the Eglu website that you can get the started pullets from Murray McMurray and thought how cool is that and then found your post. As someone new to chickens such as myself and family, I thought what an easier way to start out with backyard chickens and you know what you have versus baby chicks and not knowing 100% if you have hens or roosters for a couple months, then in our case having to worry about re-homing the roosters and added bonus of getting eggs asap or next day for that matter
How are you chickens doing? Are they nice/gentle, do they get along? I ask because I have a 6 year old and 15 year old and I know they'll want to handle them somewhat. Hysterical story about your first egg, I can't believe you got one the day after you got your chickens, beats waiting 5-6 months. Also, I know there was another thread on here where people were going crazy and wanted to avoid Murray's because Murray's trims the pullets beaks - have you noticed any issues with their beaks, can you tell their beaks are trimmed, are they having a trouble eating or foraging some were saying? Thanks so much!
They are beautiful! I love Red Stars or RSL! The red and white coloring is so pretty! Plus they are SUPER layers! I was wondering how the McMurray started pullets looked...Beautiful! I will have to get some Red Stars next time for sure.
