hi!
So, i'm 15, and i've had hens for as long as i can remember.
i've decided that i'm ready for the responsibility of showing hens!
i'm not allowed roosters, so hens only.

i want to start next year, with the local shows...
but, as i have really only ever owned Isa Brown and Leghorn hens, i don't really know what breed would be best for me...

so, the reason you're reading this is because i was wondering what breed of chicken i should show?

i'm committed and am available for a chicken that takes extra time for care and maitnance... i have no real budget on buying the perfect chicken...

any reccommendations on breed, colour, and age would be greatly appreciated!

so, please send any reccommendations you may have through...

i'm in Australia, so please try not to suggest any breeds that i may not be able to get in Australia...

thanks heaps in advance !

It is possible for any breed of hen to win. I suggest you go to a show and look at all the birds and see if one of the breeds speaks to your heart.

Sometimes as you are looking you just know that one of the birds is the breed for you. I feel that way about my Pomeranian geese. They are my heart breed.

I think Silkie chickens are an excellent place to start. Buff or black in color, some of the white colored ones get 'sunbaked' and turn yellow. Silkies are a generally calm breed, fair layers and are in most cases unflightly. I own two silkies and they are lovely and very people and treat friendly.

Showing is an awesome thing, good luck --I'm sure you'll love it.
