4hooves&featheredfriends :
I believe that they call the slowing or stopping of the function of the crop is crop stasis. I believe there can be a deformity of the crop, as in a septum, a structure of tissue that divides the crop or a malfunctioning crop as in impaired movement of the contents.
Are you thinking of something else-another term?
Crop stasis is what I was thinking of, thank you!
tulie, that just sucks.
I'm so sorry you're going through all this with your hen. I was really hoping it would just be a matter of removing whatever was blocking her crop.
Perhaps it is thrush? Does she have any sores in her mouth?
This is what it says about thrush in the chicken health handbook:
SYMPTOMS- in growing birds: depression, rough feathers, diarrheah, distended sour crop, slow growth or weight loss.
TREATMENT- isolate infected birds, clean and disinfect feeders and waterers; flush with molasses or Epsom salts, followed by 1/2 teaspoon of copper sulfate per gallon drinking water every other day for 5 days served in a nonmetal waterer, repeat monthly; clean mouth sores with an antiseptic such as hydrogen peroxide and treat with nystatin.
-can cause mouth and genital infection in humans
Check inside her mouth for sores, smell for sour odors.
I don't know if its bad to treat a bird for thrush if not 100% sure? Does anybody else know?
Crop stasis can be caused by a blockage, fungus, bacterial infection, viral infection, yeast infection, dehydration, parasites, metabolic disorders, growths and goiters.
