Hi, I have a single Black Swedish that is about 6 weeks old. Her brood mates died so from what I have read I should get her a companion around her age. She is a happy duckling that loves to cuddle but I don’t want her to suffer sadness being the only duck in the house. Suggestions? And/or does anyone have or know of availabile ducks around that age in the MO area.

Where do you live? I am in Kansas city and have a single duck that is imprinted on me. We lost her mom and brother and now I am unsure what to do. She is very sweet but needs another duck.

I live at Lake of the Ozarks. Maybe we can figure out meeting somewhere?

Yes, she is indoors. She has diapers that were made for ducks. She sleeps in bed with my son. We take walks to the lake so she can swim when it’s warm enough. Otherwise she swims in my large tub and I use a hair dryer on low to dry her off. I feed her duck food as well as let her forage every afternoon. She also gets mealworms and tomatoes and cucumbers as a snack. Although edamame is her favorite treat. I have a large fenced yard for her to play in protected from any predators. I also have a standard poodle that protects her as well.

Is this your 1st time with raising ducks? What happened to her littermates? How old is your son? I hatched my girl Winnie along with her brother because her moms nest was attacked at the community College so I brought her home after 5yrs of feeding her there. The mom, a pekin wouldn't sit on the eggs after I moved them here because she was attacked so her and her brother imprinted on me and followed me everywhere. Both her brother and mom got killed outside while I was nearby so I completely enclosed her pool and she sleeps inside. This all happened over a year. She just finished sitting on her eggs which didn't hatch because they were not fertile and seems subdued for the 1st time. I considered getting more ducks but she is a indoor duck and thus needs a indoor duck. I love her very much and want what is best for her, I have had a difficult year, health wise, not covid and I am wanting to do what is best for her. I want her to be safe and happy most of all. She is used to my dog, cat and my son but my son is going to KU now and she deserves the best life so I am exploring all options so the more you can tell me the better

This is my first time raising ducks. My original plan was to raise them until their adult feathers came in and take them over to my son’s godparents farm. They had recently lost one of their adult ducks so they needed some friends for him. I got the ducks at 1 day old from a farm that raises animals to sell. The first week we lost one and I blamed myself, thinking I didn’t have the temperature correct and that it got cold and died from shock. I was holding it while it died. Heart wrenching. The next one died a week later over night. I did a ton of research (as I had before getting the ducklings) on what could have happened and all I could think of was possibly it had choked. About a week later the third one died while sitting in its bed with its last brood mate. I am a huge animal person and at this point I was not only devastated but felt extremely guilty. The next day Sally couldn’t really stand so I called a biologist that raises ducks. She said that the ducks had parasites that had infected one or more the day they were born. She looked at my set up and said I had done nothing wrong and told me how to treat Sally. I disinfected an entire room to treat her and sent my son to my parents house and disinfected the entire house, and prayed she would survive. Not only was I able to save her but she is thriving and healthy. My son is 8 and she has made such an amazing mark on our lives and in our hearts we decide to keep her as a house pet. My son is doing online schooling so Sally sits with him every day during class. She is so sweet and loves to cuddle and asks to be picked up all the time. I lost my cat in feb and decided to do this between cats, but Sally has turned out to be our new cat. We take her everywhere we go. Do you ever travel this direction? If so we could have play dates with them and talk. Sally is a true part of our family now. It’s just me and my son so she is definitely treated like royalty here.
