Looking for a Duck Pond Photo/Thread

I know that the soil has to have a certain amount of clay to hold water, but it cant be that uncommon. Here in southeast missouri there is a farm pond every couple of miles, and they dont use liners. I read in the missouri dept of agiculture pamphlet on building ponds, and we are supposed to have good soil for building ponds. It said that if you ball up the soil of the perspective site and the ball holds together, then it should be adequate for a pond site. I'm going to give it a try. I'd really prefer to not use a liner because it holds duck "fallout" and requires more maintenance. In a natural pond that organic material would recycle better I would think.

Then again, the one in the photo above is awfully nice.

Many land grant universities have extension agents that might be able to help you with your concerns on building a pond or not. Even in high clay content soils, its not uncommon for underlying layers to be penetrable. A pretty good test is how fast/slow aquifers below fill and empty - and that information is sometimes available through the USGS websites. But, if you can find a county or university extension agent, they might be able to fill you in and save you from making a giant divet in the yard that won't work as a pond.

yes, the one in the picture is nice!!! I use the Skippy filter that Wifezilla talked about. It keeps mine very clean. You might want to try that if it will not hold water.

I am originally from Wisconsin. There are ponds everywhere there too, but that is because there is a lot of ground water and natural fed springs. If I just dug a hole and filled it with water, it would be gone in a few hours. Believe me, my brother and I tried to make ponds MANY times...mom wasn't too happy about our attempts

I'm pretty sure I have the pond you are talking about, the user PM'd me the pictures and they fit your description... I'll post them when I home!

Okay here are the pond pictures I think you are looking for, they are from RHewitt...

Those are the ones!!! Glad you were able to find them. If I remember correctly, the person who built that said that it holds water fine. I want a pond like that!

Having a high water table is a Hugh plus. My yard is wet 10 months out of the year. My dad has been trying to convince me to build a pond. Ponds are alot of work. On the plus side look how much grass you could loss by building the pond.
