Long islander looking to add a rooster to their flock!!

Are you permitted roosters where you are? Full grown? What breed? How far are you willing to travel?

Think hard about getting a rooster, they are a lot to handle.

You can protect your chickens by building a secure coop and run far, far better than a rooster ever could. He’ll probably actually be the danger to your hens. How many hens do you have? You’ll need at least 8-10 or he’ll ovebreed. And sometimes they’ll just pick favorites anyway, and rip and claw all her feathers out, kill her even.

Quail roosters, but I read here a lot, and roosters definitely can and will hurt hens.

Can and do, but it is the exception rather than the rule.

Still a risk, and I don’t take risks. (Edit for clarification): and others should know these risks, instead of thinking roosters are all sunshine and rainbows “gentlemen”. IMO they shouldn’t even have access to hens unless you’re breeding, and then they should be separated when you have what you need.
