Looking for a Rooster!!

Still a risk, and I don’t take risks. (Edit for clarification): and others should know these risks, instead of thinking roosters are all sunshine and rainbows “gentlemen”. IMO they shouldn’t even have access to hens unless you’re breeding, and then they should be separated when you have what you need.
You're entitled to your opinion but you're not basing it on your own personal experience. I have had dozens of males on my farm and none of them have ever hurt the hens.

You can protect your chickens by building a secure coop and run far, far better than a rooster ever could. He’ll probably actually be the danger to your hens. How many hens do you have? You’ll need at least 8-10 or he’ll ovebreed. And sometimes they’ll just pick favorites anyway, and rip and claw all her feathers out, kill her even.
While I agree that a secure coop and run is the very best protection, I would encourage you to educate yourself concerning roosters. Someone has misinformed you. There are plenty of good roosters in the world. Many of them are able to exist with fewer than 8 hens and not cause them harm. Furthermore, a rooster who overbreeds a hen to that extent, is bullying her, not loving her. That rooster is the exception, not the rule.

We’ll have to agree to disagree.

I agree!

As a number have written, there are good and bad roosters. Only a secure coop will protect them from predators, when they are in it.

Our run is not yet predator proof, but they free range all day and in a secure coop through the night.

We have 2 roos, the 2 year old is wonderful, except he has a couple of favs, who need a saddle. He alerts to a couple of hawks who reside nearby and remains Not under cover as he calls to the girls to get under cover. Yes, I am guessing that is what he is doing as I watched. The other roo, 1 yr, is rather emasculated by the senior roo and rarely mounts the hens. Our neighbor/dear friend, has had a couple of unruly roos, who became soup after 1 chance.

We are hatching eggs. This spring 15 hatched and will hatch several more next March/April, need a rooster for that, unless we want to pay for the hatching eggs.

It's a choice but good to know about roos before you get one. Not sure if it makes a difference, but our roos grew with their hatch mates. We have 17 layers, 6 pullets and about 12 unsure 2 month olds.

Hi!

Long islander looking to add a rooster to their flock!!
Greetings & Salutations. Welcome to BYC and glad to have you as a member.
I'm sorry, I replied to a post and realized that I did not say hello/welcome.
You can search the Forums for Buy-Sell-Trade and in the Managing Your Flock, search for Adding Rooster and you will have some results to go through.
Enjoy learning and have fun.
