Hi
I am looking for a feeder I can put outside that will protect the food from the weather. I've looked at http://www.grandpasfeeders.com/ but those are really expensive. I've also looked at http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/extreme_range_feeder.html and at
http://www.farmtek.com/farm/supplies/prod1;ft1_poultry_equipment-ft1_chicken_feeders;pg103686.html I have 9 chickens and 2 guineas and will keep the food inside an electrified netting fence, so I'm not too concerned with critters getting the food, mainly the rain. Does the last one really keep the rain out? Thanks

The one from Farmtec looks like it would work. I don't have one I keep my feeders in their coop. I would worry about the rain coming down sideways & getting the feed wet & then getting moldy. I can't afford to throw feed out. My coops are super big & three sided so its no problem there.

Somewhere on BYC there is a thread about a WONDERFUL feeder. It's a toggle sort of thing that you put into the bottom of what ever sort of container you want - maybe for your a small trashcan? They are made by a member.. in England, I think.

I'll see if I can find the link for you.

The little toggle thing hangs out the bottom and when the chickens peck it, a little feed falls out. No waste. No wet feed all over the ground.

I use a deer feeder with a bump stick hanging down for my scratch grain.. I had to modify by making the hole in the bottom smaller. You can make your own with a bucket and Pvc pipe. Or look at one with a timer and motor to feed when and how much you want to.

It's hard to tell from the picture, do they peck at the stick and it releases the food? How does it work?

Yes they peck at the orange stick which moves in the hole at the bottom of the bucket and drops feed, one hen of mine will hit it with her butt.
