Last week two of my flock got killed in the middle of the day by I assume Mr Fox. We have since made a new door as that was the weak point. I know have 1 Silkie and a Amber star. I am looking to add two more hybrid hens but looking for calm friendly breeds. Thankfully the Silkie can hold her own and actually used to boss my road rock around. I’m thinking another amber star and maybe a bluebelle or speckledy but open to suggestions. We have an eglu go and am 5mx 5m enclosure.

Welcome to BYC! If you put your general location into your profile people can give you better-targeted advice. Climate matters.

Temperament may well be a breed characteristic when taken as a whole over many hundreds or thousands of birds, but on a small flock scale it's much more a matter of individual personality.

I find that my Blue Australorps are excellent all-round birds with an active but calm temperament, that my French Cuckoo Marans are laid-back but curious, and that my only Dominique is bold but not bossy.

If you don't mind a possible mischief-maker, you could try a California White -- but she isn't likely to be a cuddle-pet.

I would recommend Australorp they're so friendly and if you have predators than this is the breed for you my hen chases down the barn cats and once a possum! Plus, they lay beautiful cream colored eggs!
Thank you for the reply, sadly I haven't seen that Hen advertised in any of the near by farms near me. I will keep my eyes peeled though as it sounds lovely. Weirdly we have never had any issues with predators until now. We have dogs which tends to keep most wildlife away and a pretty secure inclosure. Totally gutted but they had a lovely life.

How old are your birds? The thing is, I know the Igloo says it can hold 6 birds, but really it is not enough space. And adding new, strange birds, really needs quite a bit of space.

Yeah I am mindful of the space in the coop. I would never put 6 it it. With 4 they was a fair bit of space so I’m hoping 1 Silkie and 3 hybrids we be ok as my amber star is a slime line bird. I’m thinking not a Orpington because there too big for the coop. I would love a cube but my Silkie won’t walk up ladders.
