I’m trying to do my research because I was thinking about adding Peafowl to my flock.
Do they live well with chickens?
Can They stay in a run at night or do they have to be free range all the time?
Are they mellow or flighty and hard to handle?
And if I got a peacock what it feel threatened by my rooster or vice versa?
If I did add them it wouldn’t be till spring probably but just wanted to get some basic information first. To see even if it would be a good idea to add them Any information would be great thanks

Hi, I'm only starting with peas, but I've done enough research and seen enough peafowl (breeder lives a mile and a half down the road) to answer some of your questions. While some people keep them with chickens, you risk blackhead disease. I keep mine in a separate pen. They are flighty and flighted (although human imprinted ones can be friendlier) Unlike most barnyard fowl, peas can FLY. They also range much farther. Check out the stickies at the top of the section for more info.

Thanks guys. I want to do my research first because nothing is worse than not being able to care for what you have gotten. I’m sure it’s not really easy to find a new home for peafowl

I don't free range mine due to most of them being the more expensive color mutations and I also have to many for them to not be a nuisance to the neighbors with wandering onto their property etc. When it comes to peafowl and chickens I do not recommend it unless you vigorously and regularly deworm everyone since chickens carry many diseases that won't hurt them but are fatal to peafowl. Peafowl also tend to be bullies with chickens during breeding season.

Well if I do go for peafowl then I would feel better keeping them in Separate areas. I don’t like to deworm and less necessary. Plus I hate throwing away eggs for weeks because of deworming. I’ll have to check out exactly how loud they are and I would like to free range mind with the chickens. I have neighbors but there are quite a distance away. A truck though the woods. And anytime I’ve had one of my animals randomly get around their property line which is not often their kids absolutely love it. Except for my chickens for some reason the four-year-old loves to see my goats and pigs but is deathly afraid of my chickens. His dad thinks it’s hilarious

I’ve been thinking about peafowl and also ducks. Probably not trying to do both but trying to decide which one would be best suited for my area. I might do both eventually but don’t wanna overwhelm myself all at once. I like to learn how to properly take care of a bird before I start adding on more.
