Looking for easy/cheap roof ideas for run!!!

I concur with mtnhome chick (sp) and airhead 43 this is exactly what I'm trying to say despite my extremely slow typing. The panel above and underground eliminates many predator problems. Not a problem mounting the panel overhead, the frame is strong enough. Doesn't sag and you can walk into the run.AND IT"S DRY.
I rake mine out every couple months and toss on the compost bin. Never gets dirty cause the hens are freeranged from before sunup to after sundown, the rest of the time they are in the coop. I have a few extra odd pieces of chainlink (bolts etc cause Home Depot forces you to buy a whole box) If you need any ask and if I have I'll send to you.

And:
Airhead 43- Your set up is great

We used the corrugated metal that looks just like the plastic stuff. Found it in, I think, 8' 10' and 12' pieces. Lowes would have 2 sizes and Home Depot would have diff. sizes. Easy (but sharp) to cut however you need to with tin snips. We used the screws with the soft washers made for the roofing and so far so good. I have seen tree limbs go through the plastic roofing so for me a little spent now could save a lot of hassle later.

As I said last night......I would take some pics today and post.

Hope it helps.

I have posted my primary and secondary run to give you an idea.

Mr. Frizzles Hen House :

Thanks everyone! I like the pallet idea. I actually have a bunch of scrap wood which I had considered trying to build a frame like creation much like a pallet to rest on the top of the kennel. Thanks for the pics mtnhomechick. I would just have to figure out how to angle it for run off.
Imp.... Are the corragated panels strong enough to run across 7' and overlap with out a wood frame? That would be much nicer than a tarp. And I could create an eve if they come long enough. I'll have to price them out. Did you angle yours? I hesitate to use metal because of the noise from the rain and we get pretty gusty here in the woods of Seabeck, WA. And yes the rain has been coming down sideways lately. My chickens just go out and stand it. Silly birds:)

I used corrogated plastic on a dog run before, I took some 2x4's in the middle to support it from ice or heavy rain. It's pretty sturdy, and if you get clear PalRuf for it, it lets in light.

Thanks so much for the additional pictures. You have a great setup there for your "many" girls. The leaves remind me of growing up in the mid west. We are surrounded by pine needles here:) I'll keep you posted on my solution!

Did you angle yours for run off? If not, does it do ok with the rain & snow?

Hi everyone, hope I'm not too late to join this conversation. I was wondering what you use to cut the corrogated plastic to fit your run? And how do you angle it for run off?

I'm glad I found this thread because that's what I'm working on now. I only have chicken wire on the top now, and my poor babies are all covered in mud. I have 14 chickens and 4 Mud ducks in there!

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

i'm not sure what others use to cut the pvc panels. i have not had to cut them for my use. But i would think a circulating saw would work. i was lucky that my silkie pen sits on angled ground, so the water just runs off naturally.

But, i would think you could put something on one end of the run, something to shim one side up. Like maybe a 2" x 2" piece of board, then set your rumbly pvc panel holder strip on that to give one side more height? Just an idear. Not good having soggy chickens and ducks!

I haven't started mine yet, and mine aren't going to need to be cut. I'm not sure what the awnser to that would be. I did price the corrugated sheets out at just under $13 at home depot for a 2x8 sheet. $19 for the 12 foot ones. I was going to try to make a 2x4 creation on one side to sit over the top of my kennel to raise it up four inches. Others had also suggested drillng holes and securing it with ties or screws. I will keep you posted if I come up with a brilliant idea. Everyone hear is so helpfull, I'm sure more suggestions will come in:) Good luck.

All,
I wedged a 6 foot piece of chainlink pole down the center above the chainlink panel, then pulled the the ends down (angled about 1 inch) I also didn't need to cut. I overlapped each panel a couple inches.
Good luck
