Looking for exotic chickens

I am new to chickens and have two fenced in acres. I have had a few chickens and there is nothing like them. I want more. Right now I have one girl who just started laying eggs and a rooster. I have a coop and I am looking to get 5 more on an immediate basis. Can you assist.

I live in Martinez ca on border of lafayette and Pleasant hill.
I think I need older chickens, but not sure. Would a hen take care of someone else's chickens? I am looking for anything unusual and friendly.

Go to BYC forum “social”. Then “where am I where are you”. First post is pinned at top and contains state threads. Post there. Maybe you can get local breeder/ hatchery recommendations or find someone with started pullets.

A hen will only accept chicks if she is broody. If you got chicks you'd probably need to brood them yourself (in a brooder with a heat lamp or pad).

Getting 5 adult chickens of different and unique breeds may be tricky. Definitely check out your local "where are you" forum, but also your local craigslist or any local hatcheries. Sometimes some crazy things pop up on those. We have someone here who breeds lavender orpingtons and I also saw some Cemani hatching eggs on there once!

What do you want?

A lot of people have a specific idea of how chickens should look. Do you have any objections to crests, muffs, beards, comb types? Melanisation? Do you just want variety, or do you have a preference for stocky birds or maybe long-legged games or long feathers? Different colored eggs?

What do you want from your flock? Temperament? Egg-laying? Are you willing to deal with broodiness? Are you willing to invest in predator protection, or will your birds need to be fairly self-sufficient?

Budget?

A lot of people have favorite breeds and are willing and able to recommend some beautiful birds, but it really helps to have some general guidelines first.

EDT: Also, if you want friendly chickens, be aware that it's probably easiest to raise them from chicks to be friendly. Adult birds seldom like people much unless they've been raised to it.
