Looking for hatching eggs in Southern Cal.

It has been a couple of years since I researched this, but one of the Feed & Tack stores on Chapman in Orange not only had hatching eggs, but also rented incubators. They also carried baby chicks, but not year round. I don't remember which one, but I think there are only two feed stores on Chapman Ave. - Wagon Train and Hitch'n Post.

Midway City Feed in the HB/Westminster area has chicks year round but I've never seen anything mentioning hatching egg availability. If the other stores don't have them, you could try calling them to see if they can get them for you.

Failing that, you could try the Centennial Farm at the OC Fairgrounds.

I'm in Brea. Thanks for the suggestions! My daughter's preschool had eggs from Wagon Train last year. We ended up with the chickens from that hatch, whom we love dearly, but they don't correspond to any chicken breeds I've ever seen or heard of. Most people who see them think they're the most bizarre looking chickens they've ever seen. That's why I'm looking for purebred eggs this time around. Thanks!

Well, they may be purebred and you may not know it. There are some pretty odd looking chickens out there! If you create a "what are these" post, I'm sure someone could tell you.

I had another thought for you. You may want to join the California Chickens list at Yahoogroups. I belong to it, though I've been on "no mail" for a while. I seem to recall a couple of breeders - perhaps in San Diego and in the Corona area.

I'm in Riverside/Norco and would be happy to provide you as many eggs as you want to try with, if you return the chicks to me. What kind of incubator do you have?

Thanks for all these suggestions. I'll try the yahoo groups, and I'll get some pictures of these guys in all their glory to see if anyone knows what they are!

My daughter is hatching eggs as a science project too. We bought fertile eggs from Trader Joes. We candled them last night after 4 1/2 days and 9 out of 12 were developing. If you can't find any better choices you could always try that route. However, I did check the packing date on the carton and it was only 3 days before we bought them, so I assumed there was a chance they would be viable. Only $2.50 to take the chance for us. The other dozen of brown ones we bought at a different store, Sprouts, they had been packed 12 days before. Can't see anything in them.

Have you tried putting a "want" ad on craigslist.com? You can try putting it in the inland empire section and you may end up with some responses.

Sorry, I had another suggestion. Maybe a 1/2 hour from you.

They have eggs for sale. 1/2 dozen standard breeds, plus some bantams. I believe they sell them for $15 a half dozen. I have seen a few postings on people being happy with this supplier. I have no personal experience with them, though.
