I have been using 1 gallon jugs with the top and bottom cut off as killing cones. It works fine but the plastic is rather weak and they can be too small for bigger birds. I am trying to think of other ideas for home made cones and think a thicker plastic, larger bottle would be better than a traffic cone. Jaku's cones look great but $50 for two (shipping included) is just more than I want to spend right now. Maybe a 5 gallon water jug from a cooler? Something 2-3 gallons would be ideal.

Cardboard (I used a mailing box, but pizza boxes will work too)! Cheap, easy to come by, adjustable and easy to compost/recycle when done!

You could also use those flexible plastic snow sleds (Basically a sheet of sturdy plastic that has two cut out "handles in one end). They pretty cheap and you can clean them when you're done.

As far as home made goes, I found the traffic cones to work the best, but try to find some with an inside that won't "grip" the feathers, making it hard for them to get all the way into it.

I use duct tape wrapped around the sides 1 or 2 times, and zip-tie the legs together for hanging from hooks on a reclaimed metal porch swing frame.

Someone else suggested plastic mesh bags, like the ones in which onions or other produce are sold.

Many folks use the big plastic detergent bottles. They're thicker than milk/water jugs.

If you have construction supply store, such as a Menards or Home Depot around you, you could go there and get Metal Flashing (normally meant for roofing) for pretty cheap. If you have some small nuts and bolts and you buy the metal flashing, you can build a pretty nifty cone for cheap. Thats what i did and it works pretty well.
