Looking for La Fleche

Received the eggs today and I'm a little disappointed. One looks like it was in a wet nest and the one was cracked . I just hope I didn't get ripped and some hatch

I'm looking for some La Fleche chicks, juvenil or adults. I'm located in Riverview, FL

I am a breeder of LF La Fleche. I am always interested when I hear people say they cannot locate La Fleche or any rare breed for that matter -- where are you looking for a rare breed? On BYC? - you won't find it here because like a lot of serious breeders of a rare breed, we may look at BYC 2-3 times a year, if any at all, and only if we have an account (which most do not).

If I were looking for a rare breed, here is where I would look:

(1) SPPA (Society for the Preservation of Poultry Antiquities) -- been around since 1977 and every couple of years, SPPA publishes a quite thorough breeder's directory and a Quarterly Bulletin (dues are worth just the bulletin itself). I am a member and have been in the directory for years. It shows I breed La Fleche. In the last directory, I published a very detail account of my La Fleche, how I bred them, etc. - I have also published articles about La fleche in the quarterly bulletin.

(2) American Poultry Association (APA): the torch bearer for Standard -bred poultry in North America. Publishes a yearbook and a lot of breeders, we advertise each year the breeds we have. It also lists Grand Master Exhibitors/ breeders of different breeds. The yearbook has lists of APA judges too. The APA website lists master breeders; Grand Master breeders of different breeds, judges; shows won, what won, who won, etc. The website is full of information. I am in the yearbook and on the APA website too. A photo of one of my La Fleche Cocks is even on the website on some of the drop-downs.

(3) The APA sanctions poultry shows all over the U.S., Canada and even Mexico, Puerto Rico -- there is a show at some time of the year close to anyone in the U.S. and in every State. You can attend these shows, go to the large fowl aisles and ask exhibitors if they know people who breed this breed or that breed. A lot of us who exhibit, we know each other and know who breeds what, who is winning with a particular breed, etc. If they don't know names, they can find someone there who does, like one of the APA judges (judges travel the country judging poultry shows and usually know what and where the best of breeds are located. I have always thought exhibiting a breed and especially getting a breed to where they are winning is the best way to get a breed in the public eye. I exhibit as much as am able from Columbus, Ohio, to Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, even New York one time. If you do not want to go and look at a show near you, ask one of your poultry friends who exhibits to ask at the show for you.

(4) Livestock Conservancy, LC (formerly American Livestock Breeds Conservancy-ALBC): - they have a annual breeder's directory they publish and a website with an interactive map where you can look up any livestock breed, cattle, goats, donkeys, horses, sheep (and poultry and rabbits even) , and the interactive map will show you all the breeders in the U.S. who are members. It doesn't cost very much. I am in this as well and on the interactive map. [Interactive map is free.]

(5) Poultry Press newspaper: I used to look at my grandfather's Poultry Press when I was a kid; I subscribe annually. It doesn't cost very much. If a breed wins, its photo and exhibitor breeder name is published in the Poultry Press which comes out in a monthly issue. Breeders put ads in the Poultry Press showing off their breeds, their wins, etc. The APA shows advertise their upcoming shows. There are listings of all the judges in the Poultry Press too. I have been in here off and on when I win with my La Fleche at a show. For about a year, each month, I wrote a column about La Fleche (2017) where I talked about and published contact information for me and groups.

(6) APA has both an open Facebook group and a second one for members only. You can always post on there and ask. SPPA and LC also have Facebook groups. I even have a La Fleche Breeders group on Facebook that has breeders from the U.S., Europe (including the country of Turkey) as members.

I see these posts all the time and am always befuddled. Are you not looking in any of these places? Is it E-bay, Craigslist, Swaps, hatcheries and the like you are looking? If those places, then you will find sometimes, but they will largely be inferior stock. There are a few breeds that are pretty much impossible to find, but novices usually aren't looking for those. Where do you look? Where did you look? Do you not know about any of the above sources? Why not? Is there somewhere else you suggest I talk about La Fleche. (I have written in here at times on BYC).
