for securing the lid on an 8 ft. long exterior egg and nesting box and a pop door.
Would need to deter all manner of predator fom weasels to raccoons to foxes and black bears. I think nothing can really stop a blaek bear from having his way, but I'm hoping that a good security system for nest boxes and pop door can be set up.
I've got a nearly completed coop. Yay!
Thanks for any suggestions,

Padlock is probably the most secure. Coons are pretty good at unfastening latches.

Just read on here that cayenne pepper sprinkled around will discourage bears.

:cafThanks always for your helpful suggestions.
Padlocks sound good but I was also interested in thoughts on the type of latch to lock.

I use swivel hasp closures on all my coops and pens. For added security most of them (that I've seen anyway) allow you to put something through the swivel part... I usually use a spring loaded carabiner, but a padlock would work also. We have a very healthy and active raccoon population and have yet to have one open a swivel hasp.

I just use a regular ol hasp, but make sure you use loooong screws (or if the wood you're attaching it to is wide enough, bolt it all the way through for extra security).

You can hang the padlock key right there by the door, raccoons aren't going to figure out what to do with it and that way it'll always be handy for you. If you're concerned about human intruders you can conceal it of course.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat
