So I'm not even really sure where to begin.
Last April I ordered 8 hens from a lady.
The whole thing was kindof sketchy but I had already paid and here I was driving home with 8 supposed to be 6 month old chicks that still had "baby fuzz".
Two weeks after they came home I found one dead. I had them in their own coop with a heat lamp but things happen so I didnt think much of it. I was promised hens but sure enough by June I had a rooster. And the second week in June the rooster was not doing so well. Really lethargic. So I separated him started on poly Vi sol and vitamins. Had some improvement but two days later he was dead.
I tried and failed and I felt horrible.
Now all other hens were healthy.
Fast forward to this past September I have another lethargic hen out of this group.
I regularly de worm and treat with elector but did again to rule that out. I started with vitamins but she lasted about a week.
All others seemed fine (6 remaining from this lot and others on my property).
Now in November I have one that is lethargic and limping. I assumed the limp was an injury she was like over reaching with her step. I separated her. She lasted about 4 weeks. And I finally culled because I couldn't handled the l up down up down and winter was setting in.

Now its feburary and ANOTHER one of these hens is acting lethargic. I am at a loss. I have 21 chickens total. Have had feed store chicks for 4 years and never dealt with anything like this. I dont even know what to do. Where to start or what to think it is. So I'm asking for anyone with experience to share their thoughts and suggestions with me.

Just a shot in the dark here, but are they inbred?

I had a batch of wellsummers I bought from someone, a mass breeder, last year. 4 were Wellsummer/EE cross and thrived, but the other 6 were pure wellsummer. The pure bred birds did not thrive and no matter what I did, they kept dropping off one at a time. All were housed and fed the same feeds, access to water and shelter.

The Cross bred birds are still going strong, but the rest are now all deceased. If the birds were "pure bred" there could be an ongoing internal issue, a weakness from inbreeding for whatever reason.

Just a thought.

Check thier poop, maybe treat for cocci, and double check for drafts, or damp feed.

Thank you for posting this I didn't even know this was a possibility. But I've kept saying from dealing with my experiences with other animals it's like this is a bad breeding batch. I have tried to reach out to the lady I bought them from and she has sense blocked me on Facebook. I picked them up from her husband's work and never saw the place they were kept in. So I don't really know what kind of facility she's running. I have never dealt with these issues with any of my feed store Birds so it's been quite disheartening that I paid extra to have older Olive Eggers and Easter Eggers and they keep slowly dying off one at a time and it doesn't seem like any efforts I put in work. I have been all over asking people how to treat these chickens in for a while they get better and then they just die.

Ive also read that not all wormers are equal, some target some types of worm where others can target another, and that rotating worming medicine can help prevent worms from gaining a tolerance.

Is it only her birds that are dying?

Maybe try her on some yogurt.

How does her poo look?
