HI all.
I am will be trying to raise backyard layers this year and am looking for non-gmo chicks.
I have looked at a number of hatcheries listed on this forum but what I have found so far is that there is a minimum of 15 per shipment.
So I am hoping to find something locally or a hatchery that will ship smaller orders and is non-GMO or organic.

Thanks
Jen

Hi there,

When you purchase day-old chicks from a hatchery, they ship the chicks before they have has any food or water. The reason chicks ship well is because they can live off of the yolk for a day or two.
Thus, since the chick will not eat its first bite until it is home with you, you can start it on organic feed from the very start.

If you want the chick to originate from a mother hen that was raised on organic feed, I am afraid you will need to seek a local breeder that does organic feeding, because hatcheries do not.

For small orders, try Meyer hatchery.
