looking for show quality chicken breeds

alot of people like my cornish and rhode island reds. i get alot of comments on the cuckoo orpingtons. the gold sebrites are better than the silver, offspring of my silver have taken 1st place a few times in small shows.

but to best answer your question, i am partial to old english and fawn silver duckwing are my favorite - my avatar pic is a young rooster

some breeds will be higher or lower depending on quality and rarity. i do bring in other cockerels typically every 2 generations, but there is some inbreeding - with most breeder or show quality chickens there will be some inbreeding, the best lines are bred pretty tightly. since you are looking into this ill share a bit of info - its *usually* best to not cross different lines within the same breed. different breeders will use different techniques to achieve the "best of the breed" when two different techniques are crossed, sometimes an undesirable trait comes through. with heritage breeds like RIRs its typically not as bad as amaraucanas or old english.

when you order several breeds i will package eggs together in boxes (a box within a box) as much as possible. that will save you on shipping.

for what im doing, yes i believe its best to outbreed ever couple generations. if your breeding to show, some will go 10 or more generations - crossing "cousins", father to daughter, and mother to son. its all depending on what traits you have and what your trying to "lock" in on your strain.

if i get the barred rock trio, the eggs will be $20-25 a dozen depending on the price - the parents will cost me $100-150. i sold the barred rocks i had this summer and am starting into a new line that is either fogel or foley related - i cant remember which LOL. they guy im getting them from has excellent birds and is a judge, ive always trusted him to get me some of the "best of the breed" without costing the premium price.
