I got into chickens recently and I'm now hooked lol . Before I got chicks I did a ton of reading ,forum surfing to find what exactly I wanted and I live in a small town with a few backyard breeders that have usual high egg producing breeds, local feed stores have the same with a few rare breeds thrown in now n then . No one really had what I was searching for in my flock which ended up consisting of swedish flower hen, Lavendar Orpingtons, white blue crested polish & a really nice pair of fcbms from Bev Davis lines, cream Legbar ( these were the difficult ones to find ) . I also have some ee's , oe's ,silkie the usual easier to find ones .
Anyway I had to travel a bit to find the rarer ones like an hour and drive so it occurred to me perhaps since I have some breeding pairs I could do some breeding locally for others because I certainly couldn't find anyone who had those .
Now I'm looking to get rich of this ,more of a hobby helping others ,make a few bucks on the side enjoying sharing my chickens .So I guess my questions are :
What are the pro's con's of breeding ?
I'd love to hear the thoughts of the breeders here have started similarly . Sure would hate to get all set up and going forward then I'm stuck with way more chickens than I need ,my husband may not enjoy that lolol
All advice welcome :):)

I assume you meant "not get rich"?
That's the biggest thing. If you go into it with the idea that you won't get rich, wont be making a living from it and will most likely end up losing money at it then it can be fun and rewarding.
It will be a lot more work and money then if you're just mantaing a backyard flock.
If you go into it thinking you will be making money whether that means a pile or just some good side money then the fun of it will quickly fade and it will end up feeling like a poor paying job.

That sounds like a good answer as I was thinking I would enjoy it but an extra few bucks wouldn't be bad either .

And ya NOT GET RICH was what I meant lol fingers got away from me there lol
Didn't know if that was one of those freudian slips or not.
If you can go into it with money not being a motive I think it helps greatly.
Then if you do make a little coin its just icing on the cake.

There is a bunch more I'd like lolol but I think my husband is getting to his limit lol Personally I'd love to have a whole other separate flock of Swedish Flower hens but I can dream lol

I work with horses and as a former motorcycle racer at the age of forty I feel beat up lol The horse work is hard on me so I'm trying to transition into more of a work from home lifestyle with some homestead farming since I have the space with the patch of dirt I have here that I can work myself without too much difficulty so I figured the chickens could help with that . I just have to make sure I don't get overrun with birds LOL I love them all :)
