Looking for some reassurance. My flock has been destroyed!

Smart neighbors!!!! I for one know the hot wire works very well on dogs. I have horses and on occasion my dogs will get lifted on the bottom wire when their tails touch it. It takes weeks before they will go near the fence again. I even trained my hound to an electric fence dog yard cause she refused to stay in the yard and had to rig up something while I build a dog yard. She ran straight into the fence got lifted and I couldnt even get her out that door for two weeks. She never tested it again.

I will definitely keep that in mind. Thank you very much. I hope we don't have to worry about that.

My Amaraucana hen is not doing very well. :( She was one of the injured. Her sister was killed in the attack. I'm trying hard to save her. I doctored her up again this evening (along with the other injured chickens) I wiped off their wounds with a little hydrogen peroxide and water mix and then sprayed them with Blu-Kote. Her injuries were a little slimy, which is never a good sign. When I put her into the tractor she just stood there all ruffled up, not moving at all. I gave them a little buttermilk and the other hens gobbled it right up. She just stood there, not even looking at it. I've given them electrolytes/vitamins and antibiotics in their water. She isn't eating or drinking much, but I force fed her some of the water. I'm gonna do everything I can to keep her alive. It's only her and 2 of her brothers out of the 9 amaraucanas I had, and I was so looking forward to breeding them!

I really hope so. One of the neighbors stopped by this morning to ask what they owed us (the one who built the pen) bu the other 2 neighbors dogs were following him!! Not his dogs, let me clarify. It was the other 2 families dogs that just followed him. They didn't get into the yard, but really?! "We won't let her out unless she's on leash." Yeah, sure looks like it to me. -_-

I don't know if they fully understand what We. Will. Kill. Them. means.

Once again, I'm so sorry that this happened. BUT I am so glad at least one of your neighbors realizes the problem and is trying to solve it! Some silver lining in the dark clouds.

Absolutely. The neighbors who penned their dogs was out walking them like every morning, only this time they were leashed. :) I'm very, very pleased with them. They seem to be doing what they need to do to keep it from happening again. The other family's dog (a little brown terrier looking dog) was following him, not on a leash. That's not his fault he has no responsibilities with that dog. That being said, I'm not too worried about the terrier. If he comes on to our property and messes with the flock we'll still shoot him. I have friends who lost most of their flock to their weinie dog, so small dogs and definitely do damage, but I'm not sure how much he had to do with it. He was here, he was seen, but he seemed to be more along for the ride 'cause it was fun.
The other family kept their dog in this morning, apparently. I waited and watched until the guy (who was walking his dogs on leash. He walks his dogs every morning, and the others follow him. That's how the neighborhood dogs found out we had chickens) walked past with his dogs to make sure the other dog wasn't following him and she wasn't. I had a spare collar and leash and was prepared to catch her up and take her back home. Thankfully that wasn't necessary. We will be dropping off the amount each neighbor owes us this afternoon. Hopefully we will have this all settled and over with soon.

If you ever catch one of their dogs, don't take them home. Call the pound. Make the owners pick 'em up. Just my two bits. So sorry this happened.

It serves as a reminder to me, to keep an eye on the neighborhood dogs here. We have a few that have wandered into our yard and the first place they go is the barn with all its smells. That's where my chickens are. I don't have a gun either.

I'm so sorry for your loss and I understand all too well.

Sunday, I heard my free ranging guineas making a terribly noise. I ran outside to find three lab sized dogs running and barking happily in my woods.

I also found three bodies and three injured guineas over the course of the afternoon. The three injured have since died despite my attempt at treating their wounds. So, my little flock of 17 nearly grown guineas has been reduced to 11.
We live out in the country with our nearest neighbors nearly a mile away by road, bot not so far by dogs running through the woods. At least two of the three had on collars. I had never seen them before.

You want to know the amazing thing? My 20 chickens were free ranging in my yard and are all unharmed! The guinea slaughter took place a mere 20 yards away in the woods. Of that, I am thankful.

I'm sorry to hear that. :( I think 'm going to have one die on me despite everything I'm doing for her. I just gave her a drink because she's stopped drinking on her own and she started rasping and gurgling. A few seconds later blood tinted, smelly liquid came out of the wounds in her chest!

I think I'm going to have to cull her.

Keep a very close eye on them. That's how it started here. Just a dog, curious about the smells and fluffy little chickens. We chased her away and told her to go home. She didn't come back for about a month. Came back. Chased her away. Came back the next day. Chased her away and talked to owners. Came back about a week later with friends and eat almost every darned chicken on the place. (Okay, so not quite, but still.) Don't take it too lightly. Be careful.
