We just received our first flock a week ago and I’m freaking out a bit. We have 16 chicks that are 7 weeks old and I’m starting to see a lot of red combs already...9 to be exact. Please tell me that some hens develop early and that this doesn’t necessarily mean we are going to end up with 9 Roos. Our flock is mixed breeds. Just looking for some reassurance since this is our first flock.

It is possible for some of these to be maturing quickly but for 7 weeks old with a bunch of redness it sounds like you might have some roosters.

Yea it kinda does sound like you have 9 cockerels. Pictures might help.
I don’t have pictures of all of them but here is what I’ve got.

I hope you're right about ten! It is easier to tell when you have both sexes in the breed to compare.
My JG hens have been very nice!
Are you planning to keep a rooster? If yes, start thinking about who's nice, who's naughty, and what your breeding goals are. Eliminate any that are aggressive, and try to hang on to them for a while to be able to judge better.

We are planning to keep a rooster maybe two. One will definitely be our JG Bubba...he is so sweet.

I’m going to agree with 1, 3, 5, and 6. I’m not sure about 10. The comb doesn’t look very red, so it just might be the fact that we’re looking at it from head on. I’d say pullet. Either way they’re nice looking birds!!
