Looking for thoughts on this hen's color genetic makeup

That's a good point that you bring up. I would say no, not from sun or dusting. I have seen others (mostly cockerels) with the diluted red/brown coloring as well. Just trying to figure out what it is and if it's something I want to play with.

I will add that I have hatched full black mottled from these birds (I have a black hen carrying the mottled gene and must assume the dad does too). This is the first with blue of this kind though. I also believe I have gotten mille fleur in this pen, but did not keep the chick to grow it out to see the final color. I may have to just do just test hatching and see what else crops up. In addition, I've seen buff colored birds crop up, but I don't think I have anything that should produce buff in there. Would that be an indication of dun being present?

So she can't be splash, if the father is the birchen, gold/silver? What colour are the birds in that pen supposed to be?

The khaki colour of the dun gene is the homozgous form, it is unlikely that khaki would crop up as it is not a recessive. The dun gene I^D is incompletely dominant & behaves much like blue.

I'm not sure what you mean. They are what they are. The adult group is a mixed pen of different colored birds. The youngsters in the pic were for a blue/red (no name really) project at that time, however I decided not to pursue it.

As for the roo, I was under the impression he was gold duckwing (more black than duckwing tho). He has produced duckwing and bbr wannabe type offspring. What is the difference between duckwing and birchen? His chicks are typically the ones with the chipmunk look and eye stripe when crossed to other wild type hens.

So, I'm guessing by the responses so far and what we've discussed the hen in question is likely a very light blue mottled (with some red leakage?)? Nothing more or less to that.

Sorry, I assumed that if you were breeding them you they would be supposed to be a certain colour or a certain cross & not a random mating. Aren't araucanas expected to be a standard colour in US?

He doesn't appear to be duckwing.....breast lacing, crowwing? If he has e+ offspring then he must be heterozygous for wild type. He also appears to be heterozygous for gold/silver.

She is sure is pretty!

Sorry Krys, the discussion is not what was in my breeding pen well over a year ago or currently, for that matter. I am asking what color my hen is - the picture is in the first post.

Cammy, there definitely shouldn't be any lavender involved with these birds.

Heeler - do you have a pic? I'd love to see them for comparison. Thanks!

The question is not unreasonable. If you are asking for an informed opinion regarding the possible colour of a bird, the birds in the breeding pen where she was bred are very relevant. If one knows what colour the bird is supposed to be & what the possible parents are, it narrows down the possibilities. After all, as has been stated, if the father does not carry any blue then she cannot be splash. It's all very well having people make suggestions like lavender or splash & then your saying it can't be this & it can't be that.

As for birchen & duckwing you asked that after I said he looked like a birchen het for silver & gold.

I know nothing about US type Araucanas pas their being supposed to have tufts & be rumpless. I do not know how they are usually bred nor do I know anything of their standards. It does not seem unreasonable that I might ask a question about them.

The potential parents were posted and the project explained, as well as other offspring pictured that came out of that pen. How I breed them is really none of your business. The post really had nothing to do with the breed itself..it was a color question. If you don't have helpful advice, I would have to ask that you move on to the next breed/genetics question to take your criticisms and condescending remarks there.
