(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
In March of 2017 I bought 6 chicks and managed to get 5 of them to adulthood. Lost one that was runty and never quite like the rest. Of course one thing lead to another and I now have 13 hens and a rooster (a mistake)

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
As I said 14 chickens.

(3) What breeds do you have?
I have a mixture, sex links, buff orpingons, banty, and americaunas

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
A friend who sort of talked me into getting chickens in the first place.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I breed and show AKC registered Chihuahua's. I sometimes have pet puppies for sale--they can't all be show dogs.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I am a single, older woman, I work FT as a Counselor in an world renonwn addiction center. I have dogs, which was the main reason for the chickens. I got an infestation of ticks and tried everything to get rid of them with no luck. The outside seems much better, however they are in my house and really continue to struggle to get rid of them there. I had no idea that chickens had such personalities. When I was a very little child I remember my grandmother having chickens (a lot of them) but of course being small I don't remember anything about them or what she did with them.

Hi Kathy welcome to BYC. Now that's a great friend that turned you onto chickens. They sure can sneak into your heart cant they. When I was a child my Aunt and Uncle had chickens and I loved going up with my parents. They lived in the county while we were in a large community close to a big city. But the memories of going with my aunt to collect eggs are embedded into my heart. These are things we will never forget. I am sorry you ended up losing one of your chicks. Do you plan on getting even more any time soon? Chicken math is crazy.

Hi Kathy, always great to meet another dog person. I used to breed & show Cockers many years ago. BYC has an abundance of dog folks that show, breed, train, judge, etc. wide range of breeds, obedience, tracking, agility, search & rescue, service dog, even cadaver dogs., and oh yes, they have chickens too.

Do you have smooth coats or long hairs? It sounds like you need to remove the dogs and other pets, and use those fumigator tick products in the home while everyone & living thing is elsewhere.

BTW guineas are the top TICK eaters, though I don't think you would want one in the house.
