I raise serama and keep them in my basement. The pairs and trios are in their own cages. I have a brooder area and a couple grow out pens. When they are 3 to 4 months old I then offer them up for sale. As the law of averages go I end up with several more cockerals than pullets.
No reason to keep them caged up so I just turned them loose in an older coop I have on the property. The coop is 8 ft. by 12 ft. and has several roosts in it since I raise heritage turkeys also. The roost are just 8 ft. 2 by 4's placed crosswise in the coop and staggered to allow them to fly up from lower to higher ones. I turned the 2 by 4 on edge. My little cockerals love to roost up high and spend many hours just enjoying that. And the few pullets can keep away from the boys!
Rarely do they stay on the floor except to eat and drink and socialize. Occasional squabble goes on but mostly they get along fine. I guess where I am going with this is to give them plenty of perches and places to get up off the floor. They seem happier that way.
Now this winter I will add several bags of bedding to keep the floor area warmer and hang a heater in there for them. I read where they cannot take the cold very well so I am prepared to handle that.
