Hello by BYC friends! I have not been on here since my "first winter" challages and questions... I wish I had more to to lirk as I love it here, but it's very addictive!

I have 2 twin girls, 1 year old, Buff Orffingtons. They are wonderful! They follow me around and let me pick them up... tryuly pets!

I want to add ONE more to the family.... just one! We're in the city limits and don't want ot push my luck!

Now that I have good egg layers, I would like to find a "fancy" chicken. Something very odd and crazy looking! I am hoping to talk with the 4-H at the fair next week and find a new friend.

Do you have any suggestions on breeds? I know the fancier they are, sometimes they are not the best egg layers... I'm okay with that. I am very partial to breeds that are friendly as my kids love taking care of the 2 we have, and will let them pet and "somewhat" hold them.

Any breed names I should look for?

Thanks, Heather

My DW just flipped over Polish chickens...fancy hair do's. According to the breeder they are VERY calm and very friendly. Can't say from experience yet....just started 15 eggs for her in the incubator today. Good luck

Frizzles! They are so cool looking and really sweet. You won't regret getting one! I live in the city too and have 10 roosters

Any color cochin, frizzle, oegb, polish, silkies or showgirls. All tend to be laid back. Polish are easily startled because their topnots tend to block their vision but they are still very friendly.

I have both silkies and a polish. Both are very sweet but the polish DOES startle a bit. Her big 'hair do' blocks her eyes a lot of the time and she'll spaz unless I can see her eyes...and KNOW she sees me! Otherwise, she's great for cuddling, having on my shoulder or just watching her "explore".
I love my silkies too. It's something about the 'texture' of their feathers (like fur) that's VERY soothing. My Bluebelle (pictured as a chick in my avatar) makes the coolest "cooing" sound when I'm holding and petting him.
But hands-down...the polish gets the loudest responses: "OH WOW...what happened to THAT one"!!! It's kinda funny to see peoples reactions! VERY "showy" in how different some chicken breeds can look. (I LOVE my blue/buff orpington too though! I love them all)

I have to say the polish as well but also houdan since they are very docile and mine don't seem to startle as much as my Polish do.

When people first meet my Silkie, they exclaim "What is that!" Can't get more crazy and odd than that!
