Bay Area
Hi! I am a new member of this forum and making my first step towards raising hens in our suburban backyard. Reading the posts has been very informative. I would love some information and input from members, especially who live in the San Francisco area, and have been successful in raising chickens. Could you please suggest places where I can purchase the pullets from? I would love to have Rhode Island Reds and Buff Orpington.

I have been researching over the past month and the only two places which still sell pullets are TruNorth Poultry and Ranch Hag Hens in Petaluma. Please help

I started raising chickens in March and it's been fun and addicting. I would add more to my flock of 3 RIR but my backyard is small. I got my RIR from petstouch.com, a farm in San Jose. The farm is a husband and wife team that mostly raises goats and sell goat milks and cheese but they sells chicks and eggs also. They only have RIR, Silkies and Marans, from what I remember. I buy their chicks since it's locally hatched and sells them at about 10 weeks old for $10. Chickens are really easy to take care of, just build them a safe coop to sleep in at night and provide feed/water at all times. They do poop a lot!

I live in SF (yes, the city) and I got my 4 girls from Ranch Hag Hens. My chicks were healthy and Dawn has great supplies. Check out her website, and call ahead to make sure she has the breeds you want.

wats a craigslist

Craigslist is actually www.craigslist.org and it is a website that hosts ads, at no cost to the posters, for all sorts of stuff. The ads are listed and sorted by regions. Within each region, there is a "farm and garden" section, as well as "free" and "materials" section that you can search for chickens, chicks, eggs, supplies for building a coop, and more.

I would highly recommend TruNorth Farm in Walnut Creek 925-658-2229.

I just got my two newest pullets from them. Not only did they have a great selection of both 10 and 15 week old hens. The farm was very clean and well run, and the hens all seem to have wonderful temperaments. I guess it has to do with the way they handle and raise them.

Anyway, I can not say enough about this operation. If I am ever again in the market for some new girls - they are the first place I will turn.
