Looking to Raise Chickens the Right Way

Too cute!!!! Love that idea. water would stay clean! Do you have to touch their beaks to it to train them to use it?
When you first put them in the brooder, make sure they all know where the water is so it's a good idea touching their beaks to it. But I had 15 chicks and they were rambunctious little devils and found it on their own as I took them out of the shipping box. I didn't have to show any of them. Once one or two figure it out, they all come to investigate.

We went to the farm store yesterday and they had sexed Isa Brown Chicks. I loved them they were the traditional yellow chicks. There was a sign saying must buy 4 chicks. I know that we will raise them in a tub, but what age are they ready to be put outside in the coop? Does the coop need to have 4 nesting boxes one foreach chicken?
Are these the chicks you saw?
I'm not too familiar with this breed of chicken but I am pretty sure you can tell the boys and girls apart at hatch by their color.

I am wondering if the males are the yellow chicks since they grow up to be white.

Welcome, you came to the right place to learn about raising chickens. One thing is there is no “right” way everybody does what works for them. A couple things I wish I had done before I got started was
1)research more before I got them although it been 2 years and I’m still researching 2) have coop ready before they were here 3) research the different breeds, I love my silkies but I may have chosen differently had I known about the other breeds. Decide why you want chickens friendly pets, breeding and exhibitions, just your own eggs. Do you want to free range or keep them in coop and run. Then find breed that fits your needs. Also check you local bylaws to be sure there are no restrictions on chicken keeping.

Yes, they look like the chicks. I was wondering what they look like grown. They said they were females. most were fuzzy yellow. I'm hoping they are friendly. The other "friendly" chicken weren't sexed and I'm afraid of getting a Rooster.

Don't trust feed store employees.
There are many that have no clue about chicks breed or gender.
Hold on...I am going to find someone here who will tell you if the yellow chicks are make it female. I don't know but I think this type, Isa brown, male chicks are yellow and the females are more reddish.

Give me a few minutes to think of who will know this and I'll tag them here in your thread.

Great advice. Thank you. Yep, checked my town laws and the vet confirmed I'm good to have chickens. Are the Hens noisy? I know Roosters are, but do the females make a lot of noise. I am in the process of researching coops, husband says he'll build me one, but I have a dog kennel that I plan to surround the coop with as extra protection from predators. I would love to let them free range my backyard. Plenty of bugs for them to eat. I have a fenced in backyard, but can they get out? Do they fly away or over 6 foot privacy fence?

Most all hens can be friendly...if you mess with them enough.

It's the roosters who you have to worry about.

Kiki,
You are correct on the coloration of the chicks. The pullet chicks will be a more russet color and the cockerel chicks will be yellow.
Debbie,
I recommend you purchase sexed chicks from a hatchery vs. getting them from a feed store.
