Looking to start a blue/splash Orpington flock in NC

Marlon, I'd love to sneak in Meg's, but hers are no longer fertile since Hawkeye passed away almost a month ago. If I could put her in with Suede, maybe a Blue Orp over RIR/Buff Orp? Hmm....

Cyn, the cockeral I have growing out from TOH's buff x blue is really a very nice looking bird. He is deep buffish red with dark black under feathers and tail. In the sun the black has a super green sheen. I bet your cross covered by Suede would be gorgeous.

sc, bamachicken has a mottled project she is working on.

Good to know.My son has a little mottled cochin bantam that is very pretty.I could just imagine what that would look like in a huge Orpington.

I have hatched tons of eggs to. I would advise you if you wnat a flock now, just order chicks. I finally broke down and ordered some. I would of spent a fortune to get my 60 pullets I want.

60?

I have had my share of hatching out Blue Orp chicks and its a hit or miss game going on. One batch would be pretty good if I got at least five chicks out of a 14 egg carton sent to me and others nada, zippo hatched. Many of them would die before they would complete their hatch. I've had better luck with Black Orpingtons than Blues but neverthanless, its worth the time and investiment to get the flock established. We can all inform our buyers that not all of our eggs will hatch out....

I agree with Miss Prissy on the Blue Orp hatcheries, they dont stand behind their quality while some of us in BYC DO! And we strive for the best of our ability to raise GOOD Orpingtons and we all wish our hatch would be successful too!

I do want a flock of at least 60 birds. I have tons of egg customers and I dont have the laying hens I need to keep up.
