I am hoping that by the time I wake tomorrow, there will be more than one but if not, I have to open the lid. 2 days ago 2 chicks hatched the one silkie egg from my silkies and one from the latest batch of hatching eggs I bought. Sometimes it is hard not to be discouraged with this hatching business. What we won't do for better stock, huh. I must be tired because I was just thinking that I am going to tell the next person where to go when they want to buy one of my birds for a dime! I need hugs as I am rambling! Come on chickies...hatch for mama.

Well, I'll give ya a hug. And I'll B!tch with you. Last week $31 out of 18 eggs= 0 development. This week $21 eggs, 1 developed out of 19, it's in the hatcher now. On some more expensive $45 eggs 5 out of 15 developed and are in the hatcher now.

So by my calculations each the 6 eggs in the hatcher now are worth $16 each.... and that will go up if some don't hatch.

insiderart! It's crazy isn't it! I once used a cost tracker. I shredded the evidence! Ignorance is bliss. I don't want to know how much this habi REALLY costs...Do you? Lol.

Sort of like chicken gambling everytime you set eggs. I feel your pain. I ordered for some black sumatra eggs....they were either infertile or developed and died. $34 down the pipe. Win some and lose some...and all that

Chickens still come out cheaper than a lot of my hobbies. Coral aquarium grumble...grumble....stupid thing...grumble.....

Actual conversation:

Me: I want to setup my coral tank again.

Husband: Can't I just buy you some more chickens...or ask Mrs. Shirley for some eggs?

Me: Oh, come on! I already have the rocks, tank, refugium equipment, (list goes on for a while)....it won't be so bad. I just need the salt mix and some live rock and I can add to it over time.

Husband: I'm bringing home more chickens...

Good luck with your hatch. i had a terrible time with hatching this Spring. Just one instance - spent $100 on a dozen eggs, they kindly sent me two dozen. Hatched 5 chicks, 3 of them roos. So i rehomed two boys and now have three $33 dollar silkies.

Another instance - bought a dozen partridge/ginger showgirl eggs. Hatched out one white silkie. ???

That's it. I'm getting a coral aquarium. No matter the cost, hearing the words "I'm bringing home more chickens..." from my husband's lips would be worth every penny.

I just bought eggs off e-bay 2 weeks ago. When I candled them at week 1 I automatically started doing the math in my head with every good or bad egg I found!!! Looks like I'm not the only one with real expensive chickens.
