Hey there. Quick question. I have a bin of wood chips that I was using for the floor of the run. It was covered up. I opened it up and there seemed to be a stringy white stuff which might be mold. Not sure if this is safe for the birds. Please help if anyone thinks they might know.

The stringy white stuff develops in compost under certain conditions. It's beneficial to compost and aids in the breakdown of organic material, but I avoid it when putting the material into the run.

Spread it out on the ground to dry...then add slowly to run, in thin layers.
It's pretty hard to tell when 'growth' is toxic mold or some benign organism.

If it gets good and dry and is outside -- in the run which I did miss in your question -- Then that wood chips would be OK. But if things are damp enough to form that in your chicknen house or run, I would be concerned.

Also don't cover your chip pile. It needs to breathe and dry out.
