Loose dogs in the country - don't know what to do

And the bright colors make them so much easier to later identify!

Paintballs...too funny!

I might try that on a wandering dog that wont stay out of my trash pit. I have not been able to determine who owns the dog.

As for hotwire..i'm a firm believer! I spent a summer re-building fences that our horses kept trashing. We had to move the horses to a new field for awhile and only ran 1 strand of hotwire on T-posts - nothing else - and the horses stay away from it by about 2 feet. They will not even come close enough to let me scratch their noses or pat their necks. Never again will I have to rebuild fences!! I subsequently ran a strand of hotwire around the base of my chainlink dog yard and they no longer dig out, or even attempt to jump the fence. Works for my hog, too.

I use the solar panel unit for my hotwires and it works very well and are not terribly expensive. A hotwire will also be the final touch on my new coop/yard.

We have a paintball gun to run off dogs and even cats! The owners should take the hint. On the other side of this story, we had a young male that would leap over our 5 ft fence every chance he got to go kill some of the neighbors chickens. The neighbor warned us that if it happened again, our dog wouldn't be coming home. We understood and immediately got him neutered. Fixed the problem (no pun intended)!

Hey Chickenlips! I'm picturing a pink paintballed cow and I'm about to fall off my chair laughing. It makes me think of that old poem, Purple Cow.
Thanks for the laugh.

I'm rather ticked with the attitude of the law..."We've got better things to do". Wandering pets are also part of their jobs, not just shovelling Bullwinkle or Hogzilla off the road.
I like the hotwire, the paintball which will certainly give the owner a heads up that Fido's been up to no good, and SSS which is the best advice.

I become as distressed as anyone over dogs running loose and damaging my property and killing or even scaring my animals. but it is NOT The duty of the police to do anything about loose animals.
The Police are for criminals and for protecting people. cival courts are for animals and keeping dogs out of your property.

My husband and I worked for the police dept for years and it just burns me up.. to have somone call for a policeman to stop a dog from barking or bothering folks.. send a police car out...the dog is barking and distrubing our sleep?????get real.
if the dog is at your door and trying to crash in and do damage to you..call the police but if the dog is barking or running your chickens get a cival warrant and have a j udge do the work.

I think the common person doesn't know all the laws and they turn to the police because they feel that because they are "law inforcement officers"they would be the best route. If the police can't be bothered by animal calls they should be able to redirect the caller to the proper agency.Thats not too much to ask.I know there are civil laws and agriculture laws(chickens) but no agriculture police.
Our society frowns on the SSS idea, but this is what happens when people feel there is no other route and the law can't be bothered. If you were to shoot an animal for distroying your property you can bet the police will pay you a visit, even though you called them first complaining about the dog "bothering folks".
I think the pet laws should be clearly printed in a booklet and handed out to anyone that purchases a dog permit. It should also include the proper agency to contact with issues. If a town doesn't have an agency then the town needs to address that.Any costs could be added to the dog permit fee so taxpayers wouldn't have to eat it.

I've already told my neighbors, "cute little dogie or fuzzy kitty in your yard is your pet, cute little dogie or fuzzy kitty in my yard is a stray and will be shot on sight, lock'm up or lose'm."
