Loose in my yard

Are they allowed to? That would be up to you lol it's your yard! As long as you don't spray anything toxic (for bugs) or anything like that, I'm sure they'd love it! We let our chickens loose in our yard despite them having a run. Just be wary because before you know it, you won't have any grass left lol!

Does that apply to all cities? I am very very new to this. Just completed my coop and received my city license

Is your backyard enclosed? If you are allowed to own chickens then they should be allowed to roam. I don't think there would be an issue unless it's illegal to own chickens or they are too loud and you get a noise complaint. I know some cities do not allow roosters to be kept, like where I live, but hens are allowed to be out and about all they want.

You would need to check the codes for wherever you live. If you do decide to let them free-range, I would let them out about an hour before the sun goes down the first time. They won't wander far and will go back into their coop when it starts getting dark.

If you are licensed by the city there should be a set of rules for you to follow, probably included in the application.

Oh, and, Welcome to BYC!

Once your birds are used to their coop and run as home then yes. You should be allowed to let them out and they should head in on their own near dusk.

Of course you will want to keep them safe so a 6' fence and supervision are strongly recommended.

Why supervise? Well because of predators.

Edited to add....
Windus and aart make good points. Definitely check local rules regarding free time for them.

city to city laws are different. since you got a license I would have thought they would have told you or given you some kind of literature, you should call your city.. we don't even know where you live so it's hard to answer any questions.
I should have states I live in Evansville, In. Sorry
