We bought some Silkies las weekend at an auction. I know it probably wasn't the brightest thing to do, but my wife fell in love with them. They were being fed scratcg at the auction and they have been doing okay since we brought them home. I have been feeding them Souther States All Grain poultry Ayer/ Breeder mix. Non medicated. A friend of mine who looked at thtem told me I should be feeding them medicated feed because they arent as old as we thought they were. Today I came home and found loose light brown poop in both small coops that the chickens are in. Is this normal after being fed corn for 3-4 days and being swotched over to regular feed? Or is something wrong that I should be taking care of? Sorry for the long post, just want healthy chicks!! I tried to upload a pic, but this sint the friendliest site to put pics on. Either that or I just arent smart enough yrt to figure it out. Thanks, Tom

Sorry I can't answer your question but I'll give you a bump and put you back into the recent posts. As I understand you have to post a certain amount of times before you can post pics - I think it's 25. You might want to try posting this in the Emergencies/ Diseases etc section too. Welcome from one newbie to another!

Sometimes my girls have loose stools and I read somewhere it could be from drinking too much water??? It doesn;t happen all the time but when it does I do take a closer look to make sure there are no worms. So far so good! Good luck, there is a post somewhere on chicken poop to show the normal ranges. Maybe try google.

Look at the poop chart and find the ceacal poop and see if that what you saw today looked like. I worried when I first started seeing it, but soon learned it was normal. It is also the smelliest poop they do. You know they have done it if they are anywhere near you. They will do this poop either every 5th poop or every 10th poop (not sure which it was). It cleans out the ceacum part of the intestine.

Light brown loose poop does sound like a Cecal poop. If it really stinks, then that is what you probably have. It should only be once in every 8 or 9 if I remember, so you will continue to see them sporadically. If it happens every time, then you need to check further into illness or some other cause.

Hope this helps.

Did you ever, in a million years, imagine that you'd be talking with complete strangers about the finer points of chicken poop?!

Neither did I!

To make matters worse, I jumped all over this thread to post something helpful about poop.

What kind of people does that make us?
