I'll be honest. The journey books were a CHORE for me to read. I love them overall obviously, but I could have done without 3 pages describing every tree, rock, flower, and blade of grass in the shire. Or in Rivendell, Or anywhere else. The man could not say "hello" without it being 6 paragraphs. So I did not read anything else of his as a result.

It's good and informative, and if you have read the lotr books then you get a lot more of the references

Oy vey! I can watch like two REGULAR editions in one night, but all three directors cuts put together PLUS the Hobbit, that's like more than 12 hours!

If you're feeling really frisky start with the 1977 Hobbit, and 1978 Return of the King TV specials, then move on to the 1978 Lord of the Rings live-action animation movie first.
