Losing another hen to this awful heat

Awww, Gritty. I'm so sorry about Doe.

I've lost three to the heat this year. My favorite Pooh was among them.

Sorry about your three, especially Pooh.

Tigeris, my cockerels are young and suffering from testosterone poisoning right now. I know they'll grow out of it, if I don't strangle them first.

I have dog kennels out the ying yang, but with it being so very hot I am very reluctant to confine them to one. ETA: Unless you meant the chain link kind? No craiglist around here, but we may be building the boys their very own chicken yard. Gonna see what DH and I can come up with tomorrow, now that I'm feeling a bit better physically.

My brahmas girls usually aren't all that affected by the heat. I think the only reason Brigid succumbed to it was because she was also battling the peritonitis. The brahmas know to lay around in the heat of the day and do their foraging after it cools off. Like it ever cools off. It's 10 o'clock at night and the weather bug says it's still 89 degrees outside.

Having grown up in Florida, I can tell you that summers in Florida can't hold a candle to summers in Arkansas heat and humidity wise.

Its such a sad helpless feeling. We don't always know the reasons why but we do know that they are loved and in their own little way I'm sure they know that they are loved as well.

I'm sorry for your loss also-

but there's not a lot we can do- some are made to tolerate heat, some don't have the instinct or the constitution (or both)...

I've spent a lot to make my birds safe, when they do something stupid...

(see 'do chickens have a reverse gear?' )

or luck is bad- it is frustrating that we lose our babies.

2x I have not lost a bird until last week...it just sucks but only the strongest will prevail.

I'm sooo sorry for your loss.

Also my prayers go out to everyone and their chickens & all animals who are suffering in this intense heat.

I live in the Pacific Northwest and we have had a cool wet spring & start to summer. I'll send some "cool" over if you all can send some "warm" over!

Best of luck!

Seems like a bachelor pen is in order, I have JJ and the 4 other Cochin cockerals in with the ducks. Messy, but effective. They do squabble and it's easy to tell who's the lowest on the totem pole. He's gone bald headed!

I've lost 6 pure breed chicks to the heat so far- some of it was complicated by ants, but I got rid of them. The 2 mixed breed chicks are doing okay.

So sorry ANY of us are suffering losses in this heat.

Tigeris, we're even getting some of the smoke up here on the SC coast, I know it's much worse for y'all. I'm staying inside as much as possible.

I'm so sorry to hear about your hens. It is so hot here too. My girls just hang out under the big oak tree and I put ice blocks in their water and refresh it every few hours. I want a misting system but we are under strict water restrictions here in Central Texas so that blows that.
