I lost my step-dad tonight. He was more of a Dad to me than a 'step'. My pain is horrible. The worst pain is/was having to tell my daughter. She is devastated

This is such sad news!
Praying for God’s peace and comfort on you and your family. He is our Comforter.
I know what you are going through having to tell your daughter.
Not sure how old she is, but keeping his memory alive through happy times and stories and pictures will help her through this. (It will help you, as well.)
But, first comes the sadness and shock. Then, comes the grieving (may take a long time). Finally, comes the remembering (which is also the HEALING).

Do you have a faith system that allows you to believe you will see him again in an afterlife, a resurrection, anything like that? Having a hope of a future reunion can help take the edge off the pain of this loss.
