got a big fat opossum this morning. Big male - Caught him at the entrance to the grow out pen. Literally like 4 inches from the door.

He knew what he was doing.

I love making them play opossum perminantly!

I'll leave the trap out a few more days - I have eggs arriving next week. I guess I get to start again.

Lesson learned though - young chickens don't necessarily know to go back in at night. They must have settled down together in the run instead of going inside. The automatic door closes well after dark. So it didn't lock them out.

So - for all the rest out there - make sure they are going in at night on their own before you let them out to free range.

I know that hurts. All that time down the drain. Its gotta sux to raise them & then bam their gone. Then starting over waiting another 6 months for eggs. But its part of it I guess. Sorry, this happened & hopefully you'll catch the varmint .

Sorry for your loss. Mine go in on their own. One of my younger ones will hang out a little bit after and I make sure if she doesn't go in I'll put her in. Again so sorry this happened to you.

I have 9 little ones that want out so bad, but they are only 8 weeks...that answers that question. That's a devastating loss and I'm so sorry you had to go thru that.

So sorry

My neighbor lost 9 laying chickens to coyotes this week. Those chickens inspired me to have chickens of my own. Never thought I'd feel grief for chickens!

I did go get 7 new chicks because they had the breeds I wanted. I am just working harder on building a fort Knox pen/coop and keeping dog and chickens locked away from each other. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon. To the OP I hope you got the predator and you don't lose any more chickens.

I only trust one dog around my chicks, but even then I am there. That is why we set the coop up outside the perimeter to the invisafence. But that sucks, I feel for you. I would seriously be taking some dog for a very long walk if they killed my chickens.
