lost 16 of 25 on shipping

That is a horrible mortality rate, and I'm sorry you had to experience that. But I'm glad that one has recovered for you!

I am in CT, and ordered from MPC. They shipped out of Cleveland and arrived within 24 hours of shipment.

Regardless of where they are shipped from, but aren't they supposed to be shipped Express mail which is overnight?

I just lost a baby silkie last night to shipping stress.

I am in MD and ordered from McMurray in Ohio -- they came in one day (arrived on a Sunday, no less!). Maybe you will have luck there... mine all came healthy and are now 2 weeks old and still kickin'.

Edit to add: I realize parts of MD seem awful close to Ohio -- I live almost in DE, about 5 minutes from the border actually, so I'm about as far away as NJ is.

On another note, I'm from Monmouth County, NJ

Only have one experience with them, but I got 16 from Cackle Hatchery in Lebanon, Mo They shipped last Wed morn and got here first thing Fri (northern Washington) with no DOA's. They're about 2000 miles from me, but they got here in two days unharmed. It's only about 1100 miles from you, just in case you're looking. They apparently have pretty slow or non existant customer service, but their stock seems to be very good from what I've read in here.

Again, so sorry that happened to you...

I ordered from McMurray and 8 out of 29 died. The rest are now 2 weeks old and doing great. I learned a lot from this experience and will change my methods on the next shipment I have ordered from Strombergs. This didn't have anything to do with the hatchery, it had more to do with the breeds involved. The silver sebrights are very aggressive little birds in this batch. It was survival of the fittest and the others lost. All that died where with the silvers, none of the others died. Having watched them these two weeks, if I ever get them again, they will be separated from all the others, just in case.
Hope your others stay strong.

Thanks for all the well wishes. The wobbly chick is doing as well as the other 7 suvivors. All are curled up in varying distances to the heat wiped out from an afternoon of food and play. So sweet. I did extensive reading on the hatcheries before ordering and did not come across many complaints about Welp. Even the BYC hatchery review list was favorable. I suppose there are problems with all of them from time to time. I think, for those suggesting MPC, that it isn't really in CT (just a storefront addy) much like my corporatiuon is in WY, but I could be mistaken (some bycers have suggested that they are actually a meyer distributor). It appears that a lot of this is going on. I will check the one in ME and there is one in SC for next time, but since Welp will only reship or give credit so I am stuck with them for this season. Their rep (and they have been great) thinks this was a fluke weather/shipping thing and assured me that they ship all over the US (I will let you all know next week). I suppose I will just have to spoil the daylights out of the 8 remaining little chickies.
