Lost 2 to the heat

Me and my sister lost 1 of each of our hens. My wyandotte and her silkie, both died because of the heat.un

Is there a way so that I can keep my only chicken cool but still keep her outside? All of them were in the shade but it still hot there about 99 degrees.

Make sure they have easy acess to fresh, cold water (you can put ice in it to make it cooler). Try freezing up some water bottles and see if they like to lay by them. Cool treats like watermelon and grapes work wonderfully. Mine go nutso for anything cold, especially partially frozen grape halves.

In their coop, make sure that the air is moving around in there. You could try putting a fan in there, blowing the air out a window or door. You can also put some sort of a shallow tub of cool water for them to wade through, as chickens cool off through their feet. If you can't do that, you can pour water on the ground or lightly mist them every once in a while.

EDIT: Oh, and don't give them much corn or scratch.

Thank you so much. I cant stop crying over my poor baby. I was out there three hours before they died. I was with them while i was waiting for my parents to get home. Thena while later my grandma told me both the baby chicks had died. I couldn't understand why. They had water and everything but I think the heat was just to much for them.

I'm so sorry! It's been a full time job just making sure my three pens/coops have fresh cool water. I also mist their pens and them several times a day and run a large box fan all day and night now. I'm worried about my very large Blue Orpingtons with their heavy feathering.

I am so sorry about your chicks. I have been running the sprinklers at night so they will have wet cool grass to scratch and bathe in.

you need to add ELECTROLYTES to their waterer when the heat becomes such that they are overcome and begin to pant... you can purchase this at your feed store...

yes you can give that too...dilute it by half and drizzle along their beaks if htey refuse to drink from the waterer (sometimes this happens as they occasionally"will not like the "taste " of it)...

I am so sorry for you loss... I feel for you... It has been extremely hot here too... and I just started doing what everyone said, watermellon, ice in the water, elecytrolites in the water... It has helped since I had a couple that were on the verge... and bounced back. I guess I was just one of the lucky ones.
