Lost 3 chickens in 30 days

These two pullets have never laid an egg before. They are eating organic egg layer and I also spread out oyster shells.

Too much protein will cause hens to become egg bound, because surely you've noticed the higher the protein the larger the eggs. That is about all I can figure out as to why numerous chickens are afflicted all at once. For whatever reason any buff orpington hen I have had gets eggbound a few months after they lay, they start laying super jumbo like 83g eggs and they lay one everyday every single day until one day their insides are their outsides and we have to cull them. Every hatchery BO we've had has done it. So I stopped getting them. I mean I love the nonstop huge eggs, but without a break it seems to kill them. That's also when I'm feeding flock raiser, so maybe some birds are more susceptible to the higher protein issues. Either way no buff orpington for me anymore.
I would just watch your hens and hope for the best. How many roosters/Cockerels did you say you have again? Because I know over breeding will sometimes cause various egg issues. Don't know if it causes them to become egg bound though

Still no egg this am. Gave her another warm bath and went to town to look for some liquid calcium to give her. All I could find at my local Tractor Supply store was Calcium Drench for goats.

Hello
frow.gif
and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about the loss of your birds. You've gotten some good advice above. X3 on posting in the Emergencies section, and if you still have your d'Anver hen you lost today you might consider sending her off for a necropsy.

This is the thing to do. Good luck in defining and controlling the problem.
